Artist's Statement
My work is about navigation - navigation in the polar regions of the earth and the navigation that each one of us does in our daily lives. I explore these ideas in large scale oil paintings. Some years ago I began reading books about the Arctic: Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez, The Arctic Grail by Pierre Berton about the search for the Northwest Passage, and other stories of exploration. I was struck by how the descriptive language of the struggles of exploration reflected my own feelings about my personal search for direction. Certain phrases and sentences resonated for me, suggesting visual images, and I began making paintings of these images. While the images are recognizable as polar scenes, they are completely imaginary and invented. I work only from an informed imagination (informed by photographs, travel to Alaska, and observations of the winter landscape) and literary descriptions of the sights and experiences of the writers.
In recent years the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition from Britain has regained acclaim through Caroline Alexander's book Endurance and the related traveling museum exhibit of artifacts and photos. A story of shipwreck and the prolonged struggle for survival in Antarctic conditions, it is a moving tale. I too have been touched by the ordeal of Shackleton and his men, and have used both Alexander's book and Shackleton's own account, South, as written resources for visual concepts. These stories bring up issues that resonate for all of us. How does one cross an open lead to reach safety on the other side? What landmarks can one find to find the way? Is there any hope for survival when crossing open seas to a distant island? How do any of us find direction in our lives? What do we use to navigate our open seas? What symbolizes safety and therefore home for any of us.
